Saturated Landscapes

Inspired by walks in and around Leicester, Lucy Stevens’ collection of bold, jewel-like pastel drawings celebrates the local landscapes, nature reserves, parks and birdlife she encounters while walking her border terrier, Millie.

Created between 2022 - 2024.

Created using wax pastels, Indian ink and gouache on archival paper, these vibrant works are inspired by photographs Lucy has taken on her walks since early 2022. Rather than being direct representations of the landscape, the drawings capture the atmosphere of a place through saturated colour, expressive marks and the joy Lucy experiences in these special environments.

Walking in nature has always been an important part of Lucy’s art practice, offering an opportunity to connect with the natural world and learn birdsong. However, since having Millie, she has come to appreciate just how important daily walks are to her own wellbeing, helping to reduce anxiety, find calm, generate ideas and solve problems.

These drawings celebrate the restorative power of spending time outdoors, inviting us to pause, reconnect with nature and discover the places that help us clear our minds.
